The Best of the West Coast in Alentejo Portugal

A typical beach holiday in Comporta comprises of great food, amazing beaches, a relaxed atmosphere and a chance to hobnob with some of the A-Listers from the capitals of Europe and the well-heeled Portuguese.

Comporta Beach Holiday Sunset

Even though Comporta is only a one hour’s drive from Lisbon it’s still for most people off the radar and more of a holiday destination that came by recommendation rather than mass media advertising.

Don’t expect a five star destination with all the bells and whistles, but do expect stunning scenery, a plethora of traditional fish, seafood and meat lunches and dinners washed down with a superb glass or two of locally produced white, red or rose wines, golden sandy beaches that never seem to end and an extremely friendly and ever helpful local populace.

Praia do Pinheirinho Beach

A beach holiday in Comporta is to walk barefoot from beach to bar, relax in a comfortable and laid back environment and not to expect too much luxury which is much replaced by quality and low key attitudes.

Comporta is a destination that you will inevitably return to and discuss with your friends back home over lunch how it was nothing like you expected but exceeded your expectations in every way.

Carvalhal Beach is great for beginners surf and two great restaurants, Comporta Beach is a little more sophisticated but awesomely chilled, whilst the must go for most Pego Beach satisfies one’s need to be seen.

For those who wish to go it alone, then any beach trail between the main beaches is a great way to head, a sailing trip throughout the Sado Estuary or out onto the Atlantic Ocean or for the more gentile a place to observe the many birds that visit or habitat this incredibly beautiful area one calls Comporta.

Othe activities include an awe inspiring horse ride along the beach, kayaking on the great reservoir in Muda or simply soaking up the sun.

Luxury hotels in Comporta are hard to find with many tourists opting for the local villa rentals which range in price from reasonable to obscene, however due to limited availability, whatever your budget allows we suggest you book early to avoid disappointment.

Paddy Fields behind Comporta Dunes

Even though a summer beach holiday in Comporta is sublime, the authors recommendation would be to book a villa or cabana (bungalow) for June or September when the weather can be just as good as in July or August without the crowds (albeit limited) and lines for dinner.

One word of caution, due to the large area of paddy fields we would also suggest that a handy bottle of mosquito spray wouldn’t go amiss.
Happy Holidays, welcome to Comporta and if you need any additional information simply drop us a line!
