Dolphin Observation Troia
Sado Estuary, Troia and Setubal
One of the best things to do whilst on vacation in Comporta or Troia is to observe the dolphin pod from the Sado Estuary
The monitors at Vertigem Azul will teach you all about our resident bottlenose dolphin pod who have bought delight to thousands of visitors over the last 30 years
The bottlenose dolphin is a marine mammal belonging to the Cetacean Order which has approximately 80 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises
Bottlenose dolphins can be found in many parts of the world living in cold, temperate and tropical waters and may inhabit bays, coastal waters and the open ocean
The first studies of the Sado pod began in the eighties where 40 were counted which has declined to an average of 30 per year with the last count standing at 27.
The reduction in numbers may be due to the fact that many of the successful cubs between 1998 and 2014 have left the pod for open waters
Each dolphin has been identified and named using their unique size, shape and scars of their dorsal fins.
At the age between 8 and 10 they reach their productive maturity and can live on average around 45 years
