Herdade da Comporta, Carvalhal, Grandola, 7570.
Praia do Pego Beach extends for 4km and is without a doubt one of the most beautiful beaches to be found anywhere in Europe whilst travel magazine Conde Nast voted Praia do Pego Beach and the unique restaurant Sal one of the top ten places in the world.
This stretch of beach is truly amazing with small grains of pure golden sand and an expansive beach on either side of the restaurant.
Pego beach has been the hangout of the elitist Portuguese banking family Espirito Santo and friends for many years and seems almost to be an exclusive, invitation only beach to be seen at; although it isn’t and anybody can go there.
The view from the beach is on to the vast expansion of the Atlantic Ocean with the odd fishing vessel seen once in while and if you’re lucky enough, you may get to see the Sado Estuary resident, bluenose dolphin pod passing by which is a stunning sight and gets everybody to their feet.
The beach is made up of small grains of golden sand that shines in the sun whilst behind, you are engulfed by the indigenous seeded dunes and immense pine forest backdrop.
For most of the year with exception of the winter season, the Atlantic Ocean that swells on to Praia do Pego Beach is relatively calm and contrasts between deep ocean blue and beautiful emerald green. The beach is suitable for swimming, surf and bodyboarding.
Accessible beach certificate ISO 14001
Praia do Pego has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag and Gold Quality Standard Awards and provides both disability and bicycle access.
Secure, shaded parking is located 200m from the shoreline which overflows to a second area a little further away and on-street parking during the summer months. Cost to park is €4.00
The water temperature varies between 14º and 20º with the yearly average at an accommodating 17º, so be prepared for the delightful cooling effect as you leave the temperate shores for a cool swim.
The beach has security surveillance with both marine police patrols and life guards on duty throughout the summer months.
Sun beds and parasols are available for rent throughout the summer, although due to the high demand we recommend that you book in advance. Contact “Sal Restaurante” for your reservation.
For the environmentally conscious colour coded recycling bins are in use at the beach

Whether you are travelling from Grandola, Melides, Troia or Alcacer do Sal, you will need to join the National road 261 (N261) and head towards Carvalhal village. Once there, the signposts will direct you towards Lagoa Formosa and then on to Praia do Pego Beach.
You may also reach Praia do Carvalhal Beach with approximately 4km of coastline separating the two.
Praia do Pego Beach Restaurant Sal
There is only one restaurant on the beach and it’s well worth the visit.
“Sal restaurante” offers exquisite traditional Portuguese dishes with international flair and serves some of the finest fish and seafood served anywhere in Portugal.
Local produce includes sweet potatoes, rice and of course the deliciously fresh sea bass and sea bream caught daily in the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
The restaurant has been designed and built using the local architectural style using wood and straw which is reflected within the structure of the building which includes a wooden interior and exterior and is decorated in the typical Comporta fashion with vibrant colours and tasteful tones.
